FOXBORO, Mass. – It was officially Opening Weekend for the New England Edge Girls U12 Team.
Taylor Anger and Anne McIntosh each scored, but it was not enough as the Edge fell 6-2 to the Massachusetts Spitfires in NEGHL girls hockey action.
The Spitfires jumped out to a 1-0 lead after the first period and added a second goal on a penalty shot to start the second period. Soon after, Anger took a pass from Kenzley Goode and beat the Spitfires goalie to close the gap to 2-1.
The Spitfires took a 3-1 lead into the third period after adding a late second period goal. The Spitfires expanded their lead to 5-1 before McIntosh scored assisted by Sydney Nutter to make it 5-2. The Spitfires added an empty net goal to finish off the scoring.
Sophia Hausberger was strong in goal and was peppered with 46 shots making 40 saves.
Upfront Mackenna Connors and Emily Thibodaeu were all over the ice making plays. Defensively, Paige Anger, Victoria Cornaro, Hollie Matthes, Reilly Morris and Sophia Panagakis gave it everything they have against the Spitfires forwards.
The Edge next plays Saturday against Assabet at 2:50 p.m. at the Valley Sports Arenas in a NEGHL league game.
